What's Wrong With Football??
Football has often been referred to as the beautiful game. The game has brought delight to many generations of spectators and players. But in the last couple of years the game has become corrupt.
Gary Lineker did not receive a yellow card in the whole of his career. For players in today’s game this seems impossible. Today there are usually at least 3 yellow cards issued each match. Players have adopted foul techniques like diving. The players who have the biggest reputation for diving are Drogba and Ronaldo and several others. They try and con the referee with there pathetic theatrics. Players are also known to exaggerate injuries to waste time and other foul and unwanted tricks.
Football players have always been role models for today’s youth. However it is easy to see that players are not the best role models due to the foul language they use on the pitch and the physical and verbal fights they get into with other players. Players like Craig Bellamy have been seen swearing on the pitch, in front of the cameras and this encourages the youth to do the same. Punch ups such as the one in the 2007 carling cup final also send out a bad message and promote violence in what should be a clean team sport.
The crowd is also a big problem in football. Over the years they have become increasingly violent and rowdy. Sometimes when they disagree with the referee they throw things, such as food, bottles or litter onto the pitch. In some cases fireworks have been thrown at the players. In the Milan derby last year the match was forced to be abandoned due to the pitch being on fire due to fans throwing firelighters and the crowd throwing missiles at Dida’s (the AC Milan keeper) head. Also some stupid people jump over the advertisement boards and run on the pitch to have their 15 seconds of fame but actually disrupt the match and halt play.
Another thing that is wrong with football is that it has lost some of its status as the referee is not respected as much as he should be. In cricket and in rugby those who show dissent to the umpire or referee receive severe punishments such as large fines and long suspensions. Yet in football this is not the case, Footballers treat the referees how they like and are allowed to do it, receiving at the maximum a 3 match ban.
One of the most serious things wrong with football today is match fixing. Many people thought that this was no longer an issue, however, last season proved that this is not the case. The top 5 teams in Serie A (Italian league) were found to be corrupt, having fixed a number of matches. Due to this those teams have know been relegated to the equivalent of the Championship – serie B. also, it has caused a number of the best players for Italian clubs such as Shevchenko to leave the country.
Apart from match fixing some of these things actually make the game interesting because without these the game would be tedious and boring. I think some of these things make football what it is but I think that the game still could be better.
