Euthanasia is it for the good or bad?? In recent times euthanasia has been a hot topic in the newspapers and in the news on TV. Euthanasia is defined as the act of killing someone else to relieve their pain or stress. It could also be considered as the practice of supplying someone with the materials for another person to commit suicide. It is mostly done to relieve someone who has an incurable disease and to help them pass away painlessly. Some people believe that Euthanasia is a way for a person to die with dignity and it can also be known as mercy killing. The law in the UK states that Euthanasia is a criminal offence and is classed as murder. In some rare cases, a person can take their case to court and rarely a judge allows for Euthanasia. Doctors in the UK are cautious of the law and 94% of them do not want a change in the law that would make Euthanasia legal. I think that the conscience is a way of God reminding us how to behave but I think he isn’t reminding is but we already know how to behave and that we are born knowing what to do. I think that as we grow older we almost change our conscience and that we know how we have to behave and we change it a bit and we alter what we would think is acceptable. I think that in essence it is simply a way of God reminding us how to behave. But some people even if they do get reminded can chose to ignore or they can forget. Christians believe that the conscience is a gift from God and it is the gift to be able to reason and find out what is the right thing to do and what is the wrong thing to do. I think that it is a bit more subtle than this because God gives us the reasoning and if we pursue this reasoning we can know for sure what is right or what is wrong but if we do not pursue the reasoning we will have to refer to the bible or ask priests or look in the bible to find out what to do. In 1807 the buying and selling of slaves was outlawed by the british parliament. By 1833 it had been abolished altogether. However, there are different opinions about why this happened. On of the reasons this could of happened is because of the white middleclass men. Granville sharp was a white middle class man who saw the evil actions of a slave owner to his slave and he took many of these to court and fought for the rights of black people. By doing this he could try and stop slavery in Britain. Another influential man in the white middle class was William Wilberforce who was a Quaker who thought it was against Christian religion to make blacks slaves. He was an mp who made campaigns against the slave trade and was successful however, was this the only reason why the slave trade was abolished? I think that religious experience is genuine proof to the existence of god because should people see a vision of god they aren’t choosing to see this vision but rather they are seeing it through the powers of god. Others may argue that these people could be making it up, nothing really happened to them and that these people are just attention seeking. However most of these people who have had these religious experiences tend to have a very strong faith and should they just be making this faith up they would be consuming a lot of their own time. If a Christian saw someone homeless I would think that the first thing that they would do is help this homeless person. They may help them for many reasons. Firstly they would help this person because in the book of proverbs it says that when you are lending to the poor, you are lending to the lord, and if you help the poor you are helping the lord and he will repay you. This means that a Christian would most likely help a homeless person, and the lord should repay them. Secondly many Christians would help this homeless person for fear of what may happen to them in the next life if they don’t. Evidence of this is shown in the gospel of Luke in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. The parable speaks of how the rich man was sent to hell and couldn’t be saved because he was so greedy and didn’t give any of his food or drink to Lazarus. Summary of, ‘Of Mice & Men’ Chapter by chapter Chapter 1 The chapter starts with George and Lennie camping at a brush next to the Salinas River. Steinbeck immediately presents us with a vivid description of the setting. He describes it as a tranquil setting until George and Lennie come into the area. Steinbeck portrays this as a disruption to the setting and ‘The rabbits hurried noiselessly for cover. A stilted heron laboured up in the air and pounded down river.’ Lennie then drinks water from the pool. We immediately get the sense that there is something wrong or strange about Lennie’s mental state when he gets amused by the circles in the water he makes by splashing. This is then re-enforced when Lennie mimics Georges posture and then afterwards when Lennie forgot where the two were supposed to be headed for but remember about George’s promise concerning the pet rabbits. Stevenson’s novella, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde has had a lot of success and continued popularity which can be accounted to several factors, of which most can be explored through a close reading of the chapter Search for Mr. Hyde. Stevenson uses descriptive imagery throughout the novella and this could be one of the factors which account for his success and popularity. Imagery is used in Search For Mr. Hyde to create a sense of mystery and suspense. An example of this is ‘It was a fine dry night; frost in the air; the streets as clean as a ball room, the lamps, unshaken by wind, drawing a regular pattern of light and shadow.’ Stevenson creates a dark cold night setting, which gives the reader a sense that there is a cold, chill to the events that are about to occur (the entrance of Hyde). It is difficult to determine whether politicians approved of prohibition because there are many different groups of politicians and many politicians changed their views over time. A particular group, the Anti-Saloon League, founded in 1893 blamed alcohol for almost all family conflicts claiming that Alcoholic drinks were “un-American, pro-German, crime-producing, food-wasting, youth-corrupting, home-wrecking and treasonable”. In 1920 this group supported prohibition. This caused many of the major political parties who may not have approved of prohibition before, to adopt some prohibitionist policies in order to gain the votes of prohibitionists. Also many of the prohibitionists depicted politicians who failed to support prohibition as people who were supporting crime and immorality. These anti-saloon leagues were very successful in Protestant, rural areas where there was a great struggle between traditional and modern values. Being a co-founder of the Socialist Commonwealth Party, Priestley felt that his political views on socialism were very important and these views are displayed prominently throughout An Inspector Calls. Priestley uses characters to represent the different generations and also uses the Inspector as a mouthpiece to distribute his views; several critics describe the Inspector as Priestley’s alter ego. The Inspector conveys Priestley’s most important message, that a change in society’s attitude is required. Through Sheila’s words, “of course he knows. And I hate to think how much he knows that we don’t already know yet” we can see that the Inspector is believed to be an omniscient presence. In 1745 the Jacobite (followers of James), attempted to regain the crown that was stolen by William of Orange from James Stuart because he was a Catholic. Charles Edward Stuart joined the Scottish Catholics in an attempt to regain his fathers throne. This rebellion failed because lots of people didn’t support it, Charles had made bad decisions, the soldiers moral fell, they lost the battle of Culloden and his men were ill equipped.
